stratford railway print works

The building on the right used to be the printing works for the Great Eastern Railway at Stratford, producing the companies posters, timetables and tickets. As the Victorian railway system was run by many different companies, it was important to track which company’s trains a passenger had travelled on, so tickets became increasingly important as a way of doing this. The works at Stratford were kept busy printing tickets until 1948 when British Rail took over the network and ticket printing was carried out centrally. The print works is one of the buildings Rob will be talking about in his industrial history of the Lea Valley on March 2nd https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/working-river-an-industrial-history-of-the-lower-lea-tickets-7800771317 – thanks to Julian for this picture.
