Debbie is a member of the Clerkenwell and Islington Guiding Association. She is also a qualified Hampton Court Tour Guide.
Debbie loves London, and has been exploring the streets of our city since 2007.
For me every single time I come into Waterloo, with my nose stuck to the window I find myself grinning, happy and excited, looking forward to seeing something new. Before I became a qualified guide I completed a course called “Exploring the City”. And couldn’t wait to become qualified before creating a couple of pub crawls for my then class mates.
I am thoroughly enjoying guiding in and around Islington which has a truly fascinating history. I am also developing walking tours that will have refreshingly original themes. They will be a great opportunity for sharing my enthusiasm for this fabulous city of ours.
Debbie’s walk portfolio includes:
- Walking the Lost River Fleet – a two mile stroll, following the course of the River Fleet (now underground) looking at the impact on the people and the surrounding streets as we walk from Clerkenwell down to the Thames.
- A Stroll Through Clerkenwell – visit an historic area on the edge of the City of London and see the Clerks Well! Hear about the long and strong association with the working class and how it has had an impact on the area. Proximity to one of London’s longest standing meat markets has also played a part in the development of the Clerkenwell that we see today.
- Alternative Angel – find out about ‘that stop’ on the famous board game while learning about Islingtons development from rural farmland to C21 Desirable Residence. See where not 1 but 2 man made waterways meet. Hear about church scandal and a novel if illegal way of keeping the wages bill down!
- Finsburys Dead – take a short stroll through Finsbury in Islington across an atmospheric graveyard, past a famous but forgotten headstone and hear about what happened to some of the bodies after they were buried. A short walk ideal for people with mobility challenges.
