Stephen is a Londoner by birth, he has lived here most of his life. He is fascinated by how and why London is like it is. He is an urban explorer, always on the look out for something new or unusual.

His interests

Stephen has a particular interest in the way transport has shaped London.

He loves theatre and cinema. He will tell you about the bricks and mortar, the gilt and velvet but in addition he will tell the stories of the people who worked in them and who went to them.

His qualifications

He is a qualified City of London, City of Westminster and Clerkenwell & Islington guide and is therefore well placed to show you around the wonderful city that is London.

His portfolio of walks include:

  • Circle, Squares and Triangles: the Bloomsbury of Virginia Woolf and her friends
  • The City Bridges – a mini history of the City of London.
  • Mr Selfridge and his competitors – tales of the great West End stores
  • Trains, and Boats, and Planes … and a few buses too – 150 years of Victoria as a transport hub
  • The Fascinating Story of the London Underground from 1863 to today
  • Screen Gems – Westminster’s cinema heritage
  • Lost Empires – the Rise and Fall of Music Hall in London
  • Liberty, Fraternity and Infidelity – a walk through Merton’s hidden history

Other guiding

He guides at both Tate Modern and Tate Britain.

His blog

Have a look at his blog “Walking London one post code at a time” in which he is systematically working his way round the London postal districts blogging about a walk in each one – londonpostcodewalks.wordpress.com
