A virtual journey along The River Lea – from the spring at Leagrave to reaching the Thames at Bow Creek – land the history along the way

The River Lea is a 42 mile long tributary of the River Thames that flows from Leagrave in Bedfordshire, through Hertfordshire and into Greater London. It reaches the Thames at Bow Creek.

This virtual tour looks at the history along the Lea , from stone age monuments, iron age encampments, Roman roads, mills, breweries and gunpowder factories. The Lea flows through the towns of Luton, Hertford and Ware, all with their own fascinating history. In London, the River Lea provides drinking water, but was also a hotbed of industrial innovation. Today the Lea flows through the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and also through Cody Dock an interesting arts centre on the site of an old gas works.

This is a live virtual tour hosted via Zoom video conferencing where your guide will give an illustrated presentation of the tour route with an accompanying talk. There will be opportunities for questions after the virtual tour.
