It is fascinating to see how many Americans have come over to London and made a real difference here. From Harry Gordon Selfridge who shook up the retail world and Charles Tyson Yerkes who we have to thank for a large part of the tube network through to Waldorf and Nancy Astor who became British politicians. Many artists and writers have settled in London, such as James McNeil Whistler, John Singer Sargent and T S Eliot. And a number of Americans such as Joseph Losey and Sam Wanamaker came to London having been blacklisted in the McCarthy era of the 1950s. Plus we have musicians who found a special bond with London such as Judy Garland, Paul Robeson, Mama Cass Elliott and Jimi Hendrix.
Join Stephen to explore just how much these American ex-pats influenced and changed things.
