A look at some of the people painted by the artist John Singer Sargent

John Singer Sargent created some of the most beautiful portraits of the Victorian and Edwardian age, but who were the people he painted? This one hour Virtual Tour looks at some of them, from an amazing variety of backgrounds – establishment politicians and anti establishment campaigners, poets and generals, actresses and aristocrats. Rob will show you that sometimes, everything in the picture is not as it seems.

This is a live virtual tour hosted via Zoom video conferencing where your guide will give an illustrated presentation of the tour route with an accompanying talk. There will be opportunities for questions and interaction both during and after the virtual tour.

Reviews of this tour –

Excellent walk about a very interesting subject. I can’t think of any other walking company who has done a walk on Sargent but the walk still attracted at least eight of us on a cold Wednesday morning. Rob Smith certainly knows his stuff and took us to sites associated with people whose portraits Sargent painted – Ellen Terry, Nancy Astor, Lord Kitchener and many others. Highly recommended. T

As I have been to Footprints of London walks before, I decided to do this walk with Rob Smith who is a very knowledgeable guide and also because I wanted to find out more about the artist John Singer Sargent as an exhibition of some of his portraits is presently at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Despite the rainy weather, the walk was very interesting indeed and Rob took our group to a very fascinating area of London to introduce some of the people on Sargent’s portraits to us. As I have said it before, I would very much recommend Footprints of London as their calendar is always full of very diversified and unusual walks. LC

Rob Smiths walk and talk on John Singer Sargent was a wonderful introduction to the man, to the people he painted, and the world they lived in. We learned more in the time with Rob than two hours at the exhibition, and the exhibition itself became much more interesting because of all we had learned on the walk. He really made it all come alive and we would heartily recommend it to anyone going to the exhibition, or even if they’re not. You’ll really enjoy the walk itself, following a hidden route through a posh and historically important neighbourhood.
