Bazalgette is famous for his work on London’s sewer system, but he worked on many other projects that Londoners still use today

This fifty minute virtual tour explores the works of Victorian engineer extraordinaire Joseph Bazalgette. He was the grandson of a Huguenot refugee, and had a troubled early career which brought him to the verge of suicide. However his greatest triumph came building the sewer system that is still in use by Londoners today. Before it was built London experienced outbreaks of cholera that killed tens of thousands. After his work there was no more cholera in London.

However the sewers were only part of Bazalgette’s legacy to London. On this virtual tour you’ll see many of the other schemes that he worked on – bridges, streets, river crossings. After the tour you’ll receive an itinerary so you can go and see his work in person and see why he was such a great engineer for London.
