Borough and Bankside has an incredible, and at times shocking, history shaped by its’ proximity to both the City of London and London Bridge – London’s only bridge across the Thames for over 1700 years.

Borough is as old as Londinium itself, the Roman settlement that is the origins for the City of London, which over millenia has evolved into the London we know today.

Bankside had its’ own jurisdiction for over 750 years, which nurtured William Shakespeare & the origins of modern-day London theatre, whilst also making it London’s main centre for brothels, taverns, and bear baiting over a number of centuries.

The walk starts on the steps of George the Martyr Church, diagonally opposite Borough Underground Station, and should take 2 hours, though please allow up to 2 hours 15 minutes. The tour will end next to Borough Market, a 5 minute walk to London Bridge Train and Underground Stations.

Please aim to be at the starting point 15 minutes before the start of the walk.
