An ancient area of travel and movement at one end of the Metropolitan Line!

Aldgate’s stories are perhaps well hidden behind its seemingly plain frontage. However, it’s an area full of rich interest going right back to the Romans.
It has its boundaries – a silver dragon, Aldgate pump, and of course the Aldgate. But the area is a boundary in itself, between the business City and the vibrant East End, and between London and what lies beyond.
Over time traders, refugees and commuters have passed in and out of the Aldgate. Some were affluent while some were needy – but all have their stories to tell us!
Meet me outside Aldgate Station, on Aldgate High Street. The tour will take approximately two hours, and finishes back on Aldgate High Street, just along from Aldgate Station.
