Walking Tour – The End of the Line – Chesham
19 November 2024 Comments Off on Walking Tour – The End of the Line – CheshamArriving in the charming Chiltern market town of Chesham on an Underground Train that came from Aldgate is a slightly surreal one. But one full of rewards as you descend gently down the valley side and arrive at Chesham’s wonderful Metropolitan line station. This really is the end of the line!
On this walk starting at Chesham station, you’ll get to see some of the towns delights, like George and Dragon pub – once a coaching inn, timber frame buildings from the 15th century, St Mary’s church – which is curiously built on a bronze age stone circle and a beautiful sundial too. The Baptist church dates back to 1706 and Chesham has an interesting history of religious non conformity, and you’ll hear about the sad story of religious martyr Thomas Harding.
You’ll also hear about the industries of Chesham past – including lace making and making toy hoops.
The walk finishes in Chesham town centre where you can visit one of the many pubs if you wish, before heading home on the Underground and wondering if you imagined it all!
