The Makers of Modern London – Walking Tour
In the fifty years between 1801 and 1851 Londons population almost tripled, the largest city the world had ever seen – double the size of Paris, three times the population of New York. The old systems for keeping a city fed, healthy and in working order no longer adequate and new ideas and inventions had to be thought of. In this two hour walk, Rob Smith will tell the stories of the inventors, campaigners, engineers and philanthropists that made London the worlds first modern city, and look for their legacy in the Clerkenwell area.
