The Makers of Modern London – Walking Tour

In the fifty years between 1801 and 1851 Londons population almost tripled, the largest city the world had ever seen – double the size of Paris, three times the population of New York. The old systems for keeping a city fed, healthy and in working order  no longer adequate and new ideas and inventions had to be thought of.  In this two hour walk, Rob Smith will tell the stories of the inventors, campaigners, engineers and philanthropists that made London the worlds first modern city, and look for their legacy in the Clerkenwell area.

On this guided walk you will hear about :

  • A young entrepreneur who founded a company powereing everything from lifts to theatre curtains
  • The eighteenth century version of WikiLeaks
  • The hole in the ground that saved thousands of lives
  • The event that led to the forming of the security services
  • The American who helped Londons poor

Start: Farringdon Underground Station

End: Angel Tube station

Walk is 1.3 miles and contains two short flights of steps
