The New River was an ambitious 17th century scheme to supply London with water by digging a canal from Hertfordshire. While the New River still flows as far as Stoke Newington, the Islington section is now long gone. However traces of the river still exist. This 90 minute walk looks for signs of the New River and tells the stories of people who lived by its banks.
You will hear about the people who built and financed the New River
The company that grew rich from providing water to London
The engineers that further developed the scheme and a few remnants of their work
The walk finishes near Canonbury Overground station
