A walk along Islington’s City Road – home to innovative hospitals, company headquarters and a line in a nursery rhyme

Up and Down The City Road, In and Out The Eagle

“Up and Down the City Road
In and Out The Eagle
That’s the way the money goes
Pop Goes the Weasel”

Generations of children have sung about the City Road but today most people think of it as part of London’s Inner Ring Road. In this two hour walk I will be looking at the history of City Road and the buildings in streets either side, and telling the stories of people who have lived near it.

Some of the things I will talk about

The office that counted Telegraph Poles

  • A building that made Gin that now connects London to the World
  • Streets you will have seen on film
  • The worlds oldest eye hospital
  • And of course the famous Eagle from the nursery rhyme

Here are some reviews from people who have been on the walk

“This was a fascinating and enjoyable walk. The City Road is not a major tourist attraction, but this walk identified much interesting history of this area and showed recent developments in this part of London. Highly recommended to anyone interested in the history and recent development of London” JL

“A walk along a busy road into the City does not at first appear promising but our guide Rob revealed the road’s fascinating 250 year history through its institutions and people. Very enjoyable and definitely recommended” ZL
