Following on from his talks about Christmas in Georgian London, and Christmas in Victorian London, Rob continues the story with a look at Christmas in London between 1901 and 1909.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While the traditions established in Victorian London continued, the Christmas presents were starting to get more extravagant in a slightly more affluent London. The newspapers were full of adverts for toys for children, and brightly lit displays appeared in department store windows. Electric lighting means that streets can be lit for Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Entertainment abounded, whether at the music hall, football matches or carol concerts in St Martin’s in the Fields. But it was also a time of social change with Suffragettes and anti Boer War campaigners making their feelings known at Christmas too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
