{"id":2617,"date":"2014-03-18T13:46:35","date_gmt":"2014-03-18T13:46:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/?p=2617"},"modified":"2014-03-18T13:46:35","modified_gmt":"2014-03-18T13:46:35","slug":"the-ruins-of-london-merton-priory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/2014\/03\/the-ruins-of-london-merton-priory\/","title":{"rendered":"The Ruins of London &#8211; Merton Priory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Continuing our series inspired by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/whats-on\/tate-britain\/exhibition\/ruin-lust\">Tate Britain&#8217;s Ruin Lust<\/a> exhibition, <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflonbdon.com\/stephen-benton\">Stephen Benton<\/a> talks about Merton Priory<a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_4868.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Merton Priory\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_4868-1024x768.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When you go to Merton, there are very few signs of the mediaeval Priory that used to be on the banks of the River Wandle.<\/p>\n<p>Merton Priory was established in the 12th century and has several claims to fame. Thomas Becket was educated here as was Walter de Merton, who went on to found Merton College, Oxford. It was the place where in the 1230s the first comprehensive statute since the Magna Carta was agreed.\u00a0 This was the Statute of Merton which allowed amongst other matters Lords of the Manor to enclose common land provided that sufficient pasture remained for their tenants. As this was the first recorded statute of the first recorded parliament, it can be viewed as the starting point for parliamentary democracy.<\/p>\n<p>But with the dissolution of the monasteries in the 1530s, the buildings were largely demolished. Much of the stone was taken down the road to build Henry VIII\u2019s Nonsuch Palace, which itself was later demolished.<\/p>\n<p>Today a Sainsbury\u2019s car park and petrol station stand where the Priory used to be. But when the new access road (Meratun Way) was built in the late 1980s, they uncovered the foundations of the Chapter House. These have been preserved in a chamber underneath the road, accessed from a subway.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_4842.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2620\" alt=\"IMG_4842\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_4842-1024x768.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This chamber had windows at one time but they were so vandalised, they have been boarded up. But there is a plan to open up some new windows and now the funding has been secured, hopefully work will start in the summer. From time to time there are open days &#8211; more info at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mertonpriory.org\/\">http:\/\/www.mertonpriory.org\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are however two fragments which are visible on a day to day basis. First, just to the west of the entrance road to Sainsbury\u2019s is a stretch of the Priory\u2019s wall and there is an arch which was reconstructed in 1988.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2619\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_4912.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2619\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2619\" alt=\"Merton Priory Arch\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_4912-768x1024.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2619\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Merton Priory Arch<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Then a little further away at St Mary\u2019s Church in Merton Park, there is another somewhat larger arch. This was reconstructed here in 1935, paid for by Gilliat Edward Hatfeild (yes that is the right spelling). Hatfeild was the last owner of nearby Morden Hall Park and it was he who bequeathed that property to the National Trust.<\/p>\n<p>And in case you wondered, there never was an abbey at Merton, even though just by Sainsbury\u2019s there is Merton Abbey Mills.
