The seven ornate piers each with an &#8220;LCDR&#8221; shield (London, Chatham &amp; Dover Railway) still stand\u00a0 in the Thames, the bridge<br \/>\nitself having been dismantled for safety reasons about 30 years ago. Remnants of other former bridges can also be found.<!--?xml:namespace prefix = \"o\" ns = \"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office\" \/--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/121118C-018_web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2705\" alt=\"base of hungerford bridge\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/121118C-018_web.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The bases of the river piers from Brunel\u2019s Hungerford suspension bridge were retained and incorporated into the new bridge when it was replaced by the rail bridge in 1864\u00a0&#8211; the chains on the suspension bridge\u00a0were reused for the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/140322C-36_web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2706\" alt=\"old piers from Rennie's Waterloo bridge\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/140322C-36_web.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are some remnants of Rennie\u2019s original Waterloo (Strand) bridge beneath Waterloo Bridge and also a rather lovely but neglected bronze relief, based on an 1840s watercolour, showing the original Strand bridge and incorporating a replica of its foundation stone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/140322C-39_web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2707\" alt=\"bronze relief of john rennies waterloo bridge\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/140322C-39_web.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"242\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The relief gives a good graphic indication of how much wider the river was before the Embankment was built.<\/p>\n<p>You can find out more on Jen Pedler&#8217;s walk The River in Chains on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.co.uk\/e\/the-river-in-chains-tickets-11151274763\">April 12th<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.co.uk\/e\/the-river-in-chains-tickets-11151326919\">May 4th<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>Regards,<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Continuing our series inspired by Tate Britain&#8217;s Ruin Lust Exhibition.
