{"id":3694,"date":"2014-10-05T11:12:05","date_gmt":"2014-10-05T10:12:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/?p=3393"},"modified":"2014-10-10T10:11:35","modified_gmt":"2014-10-10T10:11:35","slug":"literary-footprints-in-the-footsteps-of-charles-lamb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/2014\/10\/literary-footprints-in-the-footsteps-of-charles-lamb\/","title":{"rendered":"Literary Footprints &#8211; In the Footsteps of Charles Lamb"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/CharlesLamb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3394\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/CharlesLamb.jpg\" alt=\"Image of Charles Lamb\" width=\"335\" height=\"679\" \/><\/a>Charles Lamb, the famous Essayist and Author was born on 10th February 1775 in Crown Office Row in the Inner Temple (his father was a clerk).<\/p>\n<p>Charles Lamb is associated with many locations in London. \u00a0Not only was he born in the Temple, but he went to Christ&#8217;s Hospital &#8211; the famous City of London School at the time it was based in Newgate Street.\u00a0He was friends with Samuel Coleridge who attended the school, and later on became friends with Wordsworth. \u00a0Both Coleridge and Lamb were liberal minded, and belonged to the Unitarian church and enthusiastic followers of Joseph Priestly the famous Minister<\/p>\n<p>The bust of Charles Lamb\u00a0on the walls of the Watch House at St Sepulchre&#8217;s without Newgate\u00a0was originally in Christ Church Greyfriars before it was destroyed in the second world war &#8211; placed in this church as the church was next door to Christ&#8217;s Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>He spent 33 years working as a clerk for nine hours a day six days a week in the East India House in Leadenhall Street. \u00a0Despite this, working in his spare time, he wrote poetry, novels and plays, but is most famous for his essays. \u00a0He wrote for the London Magazine using the pen name Elia, and his famous Essays were published under this name (Elia 1823, Last Essays of Elia 1833). \u00a0These were widely read, and he became one of the most famous writers of the time &#8211; even being invited to dine with the Lord Mayor of the City of London, even though he was still employed as a clerk.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/marylambblflick.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3395\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/marylambblflick-203x300.jpg\" alt=\"Picture of Mary Lamb, from British Library Flickr feed\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>His life was shaped by his sister Mary, who in a fit of madness murdered their mother in 1796 (when Charles was only 21). \u00a0He saved her from incarceration by agreeing to look after her, and they lived together until he died (although Mary often had to spend time in the Asylum). \u00a0They wrote together (at the urging of William Godwin), including &#8220;Tales from Shakespear&#8221; \u00a0aimed at young children. \u00a0This volume and the follow on &#8220;Poetry for Children&#8221;\u00a0both became very popular and provided them with some security.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s also associated with Islington &#8211; there is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecharleslambpub.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Charles Lamb pub<\/a> in Elias Street (appropriate as he liked drink &#8211; it helped him overcome his stammer) and \u00a0in later life he lived in \u00a0Islington (in Chapel Street) and also in Colebrook\u00a0Row in a house next to the New River.
