out the real London locations behind the stories and characters in the latest TV Blockbuster, <em>Wolf Hall<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/friars.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4126 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/friars.jpg\" alt=\"friars\" width=\"205\" height=\"273\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">With the BBC in Tudor fever centred on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/p02gfy02?intc_type=promo&amp;intc_location=orb_promo_footer&amp;intc_campaign=wolfhalll&amp;intc_linkname=bbctwo_drama_homepage\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Wolf Hall<\/em><\/a>, their lavish 6-part adaption of Hilary Mantel\u2019s historical novels <em>Wolf Hall<\/em> and <em>Bringing up the Bodies<\/em>, many people have taken to Google in an effort to track down the real Wolf Hall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> In simple terms, it exists.\u00a0 Or at least, it existed.\u00a0 It was a manor house in Wiltshire and the seat of the Seymour Family, one of whom, Jane Seymour, provided the male heir that Henry VIII so desperately craved (Henry stayed\u00a0at Wolf Hall\u00a0during his 1535 progress which was probably when he first set eyes on Jane, setting in motion the unseemly despatch of Anne Boleyn).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Whilst none of the action in the series takes place there, it does provide an apt metaphor for the lupine-like behaviour of most of the characters that we will see unfold in the coming weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">So what of the real London locations behind the characters and stories that feature in the programme?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The fact of the matter is that Tudor London is a little bit thin on the ground in terms of surviving bricks and mortar (or more accurately, timber and wattle and daub) and for one very good reason.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The briefest of looks at the famous Agas <em>Civitas Londinium<\/em> map from the latter part of the 16<sup>th<\/sup> Century (widely credited as the first true map of London) reveals one simple fact:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/agas-map.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4124 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/agas-map-1024x390.jpg\" alt=\"agas map\" width=\"806\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/agas-map.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/agas-map.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/agas-map.jpg 1181w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 806px) 100vw, 806px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">London at the time was\u00a0effectively\u00a0just The City of London with any development to the west limited to properties flanking Fleet Street and The Strand which led to the royal palaces and grand Abbey at Westminster.\u00a0 So pretty much all of the population of London (maybe around 50-70,000 souls at the time) was crammed within the (as near as makes any difference)\u00a0square mile\u00a0bounded by the\u00a0old Roman wall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">As the Great Fire of 1666 did for around 80% of that area, it\u2019s not surprising that there is so little of Tudor London left standing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Given this lack of authentic locations, the BBC used a range\u00a0of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/articles\/3LnHj2K1xnzQmGmjqBrtnz0\/wolf-hall-the-locations\" target=\"_blank\">National Trust properties<\/a> around the country to represent some of the great houses and palaces of the day, but there is evidence still within The City of some of the locations behind the great characters and stories of the Tudor age.\u00a0 If, that is, you know where to look\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Such as the<a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/ah2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4125 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/ah2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"ah2\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/ah2.jpg 150w, and the Papal delegation to press for the annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon and where the Legatine Court heard the trial a year later (as featured in the first episode of Wolf Hall)\u2026<a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/playhouse-yard.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4128 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/playhouse-yard-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"playhouse yard\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" London\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u2026where Bloody Mary (with the aid of stakes and bonfires), meted out her vengeance on leading protestants in her doomed attempt to resto<a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/gateway.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4127 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/gateway-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"gateway\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/gateway.jpg 150w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/gateway.jpg 80w, 12pt;\">\u2026the great hall that provided<a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/trials2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4129 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/trials2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"trials2\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" jealousy of which among the nobles at Henry&#8217;s court is credited with contributing to his downfall).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a
