That lamp post.\u00a0 Well it\u2019s just a lamp post isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 Not quite &#8211; you have entered the Dolphin Zone.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The entwined dolphins and the inscription EIIR have \u2013 like so many things in the City and on its riverbank \u2013 their very own story to tell.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The original \u2018Dolphin Zone\u2019 was on the Victoria Embankment, where the lamps were designed by George Vuillamy in the 1870s.\u00a0 These north bank lamps echo his designs and they are mirrored on the south bank of the river \u2013 oh and the dolphins are actually sturgeons!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">So, it all started on the Victoria Embankment and Civil Engineer Sir Joseph Bazelgette\u2019s scheme to build a new road and sewage system for London.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The building of Victoria, Albert and Chelsea Embankments gave Londoners new places to stroll down by the river and, in order for them to stroll safely, lighting was needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When the idea was first discussed by The Metropolitan Board of Works various designs under consideration were published in the Illustrated London News and The Builder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/dolphin2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-4301 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/dolphin2.jpg\" alt=\"dolphin2\" width=\"144\" height=\"145\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/dolphin2.jpg 144w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/dolphin2.jpg 80w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/dolphin2.jpg 118w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/dolphin2.jpg 45w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 144px) 100vw, 144px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The powers that be decided on the creation by George Vulliamy &#8211;\u00a0 Superintending Architect of the Metropolitan Board of Works at the time (I\u2019m sure this was just a coincidence &#8230;)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The cast-iron lamps feature two dolphins (or sturgeons) with their bodies wrapped around the lamp column and were apparently inspired by the dolphin sculptures on the Fontana del Nettuno in Rome\u2019s Piazza del Popolo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When Victoria Embankment was opened in 1868 it was celebrated in the press as enhancing London\u2019s status as the preeminent imperial city \u2018to which no other European capital presents a rival\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Then, in 1977, City authorities had replicas placed on the North and South banks of the river to commemorate the Queen\u2019s Silver Jubilee, with \u2018EIIR\u2019 inscribed to honour Queen Elizabeth II.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/dolphin3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-4302 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/dolphin3.jpg\" alt=\"dolphin3\" width=\"139\" height=\"185\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Additional lamp post trivia :\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">* For a variation on the theme go to Chelsea embankment where you can see Joseph Bazalgette\u2019s lamp post with lion\u2019s paws\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">* An elaborately design by Timothy Butler, cast by the Coalbrookdale Company, with climbing boys and overflowing cornucopias can still be seen on the Chelsea Embankment, but it was not deemed suitable for continuous repetition along the three miles of new riverfront.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">* Vulliamy also designed wrought iron furniture for the riverside including benches with sphinx and camel shaped armrests in honour of the arrival of Cleopatra\u2019s Needle \u2013 the ancient Egyptian obelisk gifted to London by Egypt in 1819.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">* In 2012 the Moorcroft Pottery produced a numbered edition vase designed by Paul Hilditch.\u00a0 It is called \u2018London\u2019 and features the river with the lamp post in the foreground.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/dolphin4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-4303 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/dolphin4.jpg\" alt=\"dolphin4\" width=\"79\" height=\"112\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It will cost you a mere \u00a32,690<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">* In Westminster you could almost be persuaded that they have designer lamp posts when you see two intertwining letters \u201cC\u201d that we know so well as the Chanel logo.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be taken in.\u00a0 There\u2019s a \u201cW\u201d on the other side of the lamp post and together the letters stand for Westminster County Council &#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/dolphin5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-4304 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/dolphin5.jpg\" alt=\"dolphin5\" width=\"57\" height=\"76\"
