Join Stephen on <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/themes\/footprints\/walk.php?id=17904945173\">12 October at 14.00<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/themes\/footprints\/walk.php?id=17907079557\">24 October<\/a> at 11.00 to hear more about some of these connections and even visit a\u00a0street which has its own &#8220;biography&#8221;.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This is Tite Street\u00a0and the\u00a0book published earlier this year\u00a0is called &#8220;The Street of Wonderful Possibilities&#8221;. Tite Street is named after William Tite who was an engineer and architect. He was responsible for many early railway stations and also for the Royal Exchange building in the City. He was elected on to the Metropolitan Board of Works (MWB)\u00a0by the Chelsea Vestry in 1858 and was a member until his death in 1873. When the MWB came to build the Chelsea Embankment in the 1870s, they named a new side street after him.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/jss.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4611 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/jss-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"John Singer Sargent Plaque Tite St\" width=\"806\" height=\"605\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/jss.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/jss.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/jss.jpg 1612w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/jss.jpg 2418w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 806px) 100vw, 806px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Tite Street was home to Oscar Wilde as well as artists John Singer Sargent and James McNeill Whistler and two of the late 19th century most celebrated libel cases have connections with this street.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/oscarwildeplaque.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4612 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/oscarwildeplaque.jpg\" alt=\"Oscar wilde plaque Tite St\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/oscarwildeplaque.jpg 480w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/oscarwildeplaque.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It was also the location of a private theatre which briefly operated in the 1880s. This was established by Sir Percy Shelley, the only son\u00a0of poet Percy Bysshe Shelley and writer Mary Wollstonecroft. The building was torn down in 1912 to be replaced by a block of flats called Shelley Court.
