So let me introduce you to the Cockney poets of the City of London.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Souls of poets dead and gone, <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">What Elysium have ye known, <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Happy field or mossy cavern, <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Choicer than the Mermaid Tavern?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">That was John Keats on the Mermaid Tavern a drinking club for Elizabethan writers that included John Donne and Ben Johnson (but was unlikely to have seen Shakespeare walk through its doors despite the image\u00a0below painted by John Faed in 1851)<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4621\" style=\"width: 816px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Shakespeare_and_His_Contemporaries.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4621\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4621\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Shakespeare_and_His_Contemporaries-1024x813.jpg\" alt=\"Shakespeare and his Friends at the Mermaid Tavern (1851) John Faed\" width=\"806\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Shakespeare_and_His_Contemporaries.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Shakespeare_and_His_Contemporaries.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Shakespeare_and_His_Contemporaries.jpg 251w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Shakespeare_and_His_Contemporaries.jpg 252w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Shakespeare_and_His_Contemporaries.jpg 104w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Shakespeare_and_His_Contemporaries.jpg 1052w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 806px) 100vw, 806px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4621\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shakespeare and his Friends at the Mermaid Tavern (1851) John Faed<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When you start looking into it you realise there were times in the City\u2019s history when you could hardly walk the streets around Cheapside without bumping into a poet, following his muse up and down the alleyways of the place that is generally thought of as a mecca for devotees of Mammon. Bread Street in particular, that little street that runs from Cheapside to Queen Victoria Street. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Location of the Mermaid Taven itself, it was also where, in 1816 in the church of St Mildred in Bread Street, Percy Bysshe Shelley married Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, daughter of philosopher and political writer William Godwin and feminist author Mary Wollstonecraft. They had been lovers since 1814 when Mary was just 17 and Shelley still married; it was the death\/suicide of his wife that brought them to that little City church to tie the knot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">John Donne and John Milton were both born in Bread Street. Donne was the man who nearly lost everything when he fell in love, caught the attention of a King and was the Catholic poet who went on to become the Dean of the first Anglican Cathedral.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Milton, best known for Paradise Lost was the mouthpiece for the Puritan Commonwealth &#8211; he was the Secretary for the Foreign Tongue, an official position in Oliver Cromwell\u2019s government, handling diplomatic correspondence. On the restoration of Charles II in 1660 Milton went into hiding when an arrest warrant was issued in his name, but was later pardoned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A little further down Cheapside you\u2019ll find a plaque commemorating Thomas Hood. Born above his father\u2019s bookshop he was well known for his humorous poetry but yearned to be taken seriously. His poem \u2018The Song of the Shirt\u2019 was taken up by social activists and feminists and his fans included Michael Rosetti (brother of Dante Gabriel) and Prime Minister Robert Peel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">And to finish as I started, there\u2019s John Keats. Born a little further away in Moorgate, Keats gravitated to the Cheapside area to live with his brother and write poetry (when he wasn\u2019t studying to be an Apothecary or walking the wards in Guy\u2019s hospital in Southwark).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Keats died in Italy and is buried in the Protestant (sometimes called the English) cemetery in Rome. Shelley wrote the poem Adonais as an elegy for Keats and is himself buried in the same cemetery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Two cockneys keeping each other company in a foreign land.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4622\" style=\"width: 190px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/keats-tomb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4622\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4622\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/keats-tomb.jpg\" alt=\"Keats Tomb\" width=\"180\" height=\"245\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4622\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Keats&#8217; Tomb<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_4623\" style=\"width: 190px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/shelley-tomb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4623\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4623\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/shelley-tomb.jpg\" alt=\"Shelley's Tomb\" width=\"180\" height=\"278\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4623\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shelley&#8217;s Tomb<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In 2012 the Daily Telegraph reported research that suggests the sound of the Bow Bells has been significantly affected by ambient noise level in the capital (meaning you can\u2019t hear them very far away) Dick Whittington would never have made it back from Highgate in the 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century apparently &#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Meet the Cockney Poets on Jill\u2019s walk <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/themes\/footprints\/walk.php?id=17907040440\">\u2018The City by the Book\u2019<\/a>.
