They are \u2018outsiders\u2019 \u2013 the introverted, intellectual lawyer who has absolutely no luck with women and the swaggering, streetwise young man who attracts women like flies. A third recurring character is Guy of Malton, another outsider, a Spanish Moor. He studied medicine in France and practiced as a doctor but can\u2019t do this when he first comes to London although Matthew manages to get him admitted to the Apothecaries Guild.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Although it\u2019s sometimes difficult to superimpose the 16<sup>th<\/sup> Century City over our 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century streets it\u2019s surprising how much is still around to illustrate the books as we walk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/shardlake-jill2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4739 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/shardlake-jill2.png\" alt=\"shardlake jill2\" width=\"112\" height=\"112\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/shardlake-jill2.png 112w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/shardlake-jill2.png 80w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/shardlake-jill2.png 45w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 112px) 100vw, 112px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Staple Inn on Holborn is a beautifully restored Tudor facade, one of very few left in the Square Mile, and once you start walking through Lincoln\u2019s Inn it\u2019s quite easier to imagine black cloaked lawyers moving purposefully from Chambers to Great Hall, from Chapel to Library as they go about their business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Lawyers moved out to the hamlet of Holborn in the 13<sup>th<\/sup> Century after Henry III decided he didn\u2019t want them inside the City walls and the Pope decreed that the clergy could no longer teach common law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">From these two decisions came the Inns of Chancery and the Inns of Court.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The Inns of Chancery were like Prep Schools \u2013 training young men for the next step in a legal career. They are gone now as students study law at university but their names live on the streets \u2013 Thavies Inn, Barnards Inn, Furnival Inn, Cliffords Inn and of course Staple Inn which has housed the Actuaries since the late 19<sup>th<\/sup> Century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But Sansom didn\u2019t stop there.
