{"id":4843,"date":"2015-11-12T22:36:17","date_gmt":"2015-11-12T22:36:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/?p=4843"},"modified":"2015-11-13T17:36:23","modified_gmt":"2015-11-13T17:36:23","slug":"fleming-vs-goldfinger-what-really-happened-when-the-architect-took-on-the-author","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/2015\/11\/fleming-vs-goldfinger-what-really-happened-when-the-architect-took-on-the-author\/","title":{"rendered":"Fleming vs. Goldfinger; what really happened when the architect took on the author"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">With\u00a0<em>Spectre<\/em>,\u00a0the latest Bond adventure\u00a0hitting our screens recently, <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/guides\/michael-duncan\/\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Duncan<\/a> explores\u00a0the story that\u00a0links one of\u00a0Fleming&#8217;s most famous villains with\u00a0a couple of famous London Tower blocks and an architecturally-significant Hampstead terrace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Auric_Goldfinger-\u00a9-1964-Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer-United-Artists-Danjak-LLC-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4851\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Auric_Goldfinger-\u00a9-1964-Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer-United-Artists-Danjak-LLC-.jpg\" alt=\"Auric_Goldfinger \u00a9 1964 Metro Goldwyn Meyer, United Artists, Danjak LLC\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Like most great writers, Ian Fleming\u00a0took inspiration for his fictional characters from real life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">He came upon the name James Bond from reading a book on ornithology\u00a0by a man of that name.\u00a0 While he never actually met the bird-watcher, he thought the monosyllabic name relayed a strength and directness that was ideal for the type of spy he wanted to portray.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">As far as I know, the twitcher version of James Bond never took umbrage at being turned into a fearless, alcoholic, womanising, psychopathic fictional character (what reasonable man would?).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But the same\u00a0cannot be said\u00a0for the inspiration\u00a0behind the\u00a0name of\u00a0perhaps\u00a0Fleming&#8217;s most\u00a0famous villain, Goldfinger.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/trellick-tower-SB-crop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4849 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/trellick-tower-SB-crop-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"trellick tower SB crop\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/trellick-tower-SB-crop.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/trellick-tower-SB-crop.jpg 150w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/trellick-tower-SB-crop.jpg 1021w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/trellick-tower-SB-crop.jpg 80w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/trellick-tower-SB-crop.jpg 118w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/trellick-tower-SB-crop.jpg 239w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/trellick-tower-SB-crop.jpg 45w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/trellick-tower-SB-crop.jpg 1612w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/trellick-tower-SB-crop.jpg 2418w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Erno Goldfinger was the renowned\u00a01930&#8217;s modernist architect who designed (among others) the Brutalist Trellick and\u00a0Balfron Towers\u00a0(respectively North Kensington and Poplar) and 2 Willow Road in Hampstead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">It\u2019s commonly accepted that Fleming got the idea for the name Goldfinger\u00a0when he first heard it mentioned whilst chatting over a round of golf with John Blackwell, a cousin of Erno Goldfinger\u2019s wife, Ursula.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The exceptionally tall Erno Goldfinger was by all accounts a humourless man.\u00a0 A Marxist, born into a Jewish family in Hungary who took British nationality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The fictional villain, Auric Goldfinger was a short, Jewish Soviet agent. He was also a foreigner who\u00a0became a naturalised Brit and, like his architect namesake, lacked people skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">According to\u00a0<em>The Man with the Golden Typewriter,<\/em>\u00a0a compilation of Ian Fleming&#8217;s letters that has just been published, Erno let it be known that he thought his name was being brought into disrepute by being chosen as that of a Bond arch-villain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Whilst the exact nature of\u00a0any demands he might have made are unknown, given there were few (if any) other\u00a0Goldfingers in Britain at the time and fearing a delay in the publication of Goldfinger and a loss of earnings, the publishers of the Bond books certainly thought that it worthwhile\u00a0coming to some sort of arrangement with the architect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The publisher had carried out some research into Erno and said they <em>&#8220;discovered quite a bit, none of it very pleasant and all of it made us unusually wary&#8221;.\u00a0<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But Fleming himself was not to be bullied.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In a letter from Jamaica, Fleming told his publisher not to <em>&#8220;stand for any nonsense from the Golden-Finger&#8221;<\/em> as there were many others of the Goldfinger name in US and German telephone directories.\u00a0 In the same letter he suggests inserting an erratum slip to change the name throughout to Goldprick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">As we now know, despite being perhaps the greatest lost Shirley Bassey hit, Goldprick didn\u2019t make publication and was confined to an angry letter exchange.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">And Erno Goldfinger, despite his reputation for being difficult and for having huge rages, was\u00a0placated relatively easily by the addition of an \u201call characters are fictional&#8230;\u201d disclaimer in early editions and being sent a few complimentary copies of the book.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Some looking to sprinkle a little more mischief into the story have\u00a0writ<a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Willow-Road-2-TB.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4861\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Willow-Road-2-TB-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Willow Road 2 TB\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Willow-Road-2-TB.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Willow-Road-2-TB.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Willow-Road-2-TB.jpg 1612w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Willow-Road-2-TB.jpg 2418w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>ten that Fleming, a sometime Hampstead resident, took issue with Erno Goldfinger because of his supposed disapproval of the unashamedly modernist house\u00a0he built at Willow Road in the leafy borough.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Whilst good scandal-mongering copy,\u00a0an unfortunate truth for those who would seek to peddle it is that there seems to be no\u00a0evidence of this (nor indeed that Fleming had a any strong views either way on modernist architecture).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Fleming would, however, have\u00a0certainly have disliked Erno Goldfinger\u2019s politics\u00a0and given the characters of both men it is difficult to imagine them getting on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But perhaps the real truth is, like his choice of \u201cJames Bond\u201d, he thought the name \u201cGoldfinger\u201d was just too good not to make into a character.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Check Michael
