for <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">London.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/guides\/stephen-benton\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen Benton<\/a> tells us more.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/King-William-Street-plaque.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5060\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/King-William-Street-plaque-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"King William Street plaque\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/King-William-Street-plaque.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/King-William-Street-plaque.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/King-William-Street-plaque.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">This first electric underground train line ran some 3\u00bc miles between Stockwell and King William Street and it was built by the City and South London Railway (CSLR).\u00a0 However, it was almost not the first electric service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The original plan was to haul the train by cables, like the system used by San Francisco\u2019s cablecars.\u00a0 U<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">nfortunately the cable contractor went bust before this plan came to fruition so, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">in a classic case of necessity being the mother of invention,<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> the CSLR opted for electric-powered trains, a brand-new technology at the time.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/early-LU-electric-train.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-5058\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/early-LU-electric-train-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"early LU electric train\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/early-LU-electric-train.jpg 150w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/early-LU-electric-train.jpg 80w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/early-LU-electric-train.jpg 118w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/early-LU-electric-train.jpg 239w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/early-LU-electric-train.jpg 45w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/early-LU-electric-train.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/early-LU-electric-train.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">These first trains were much smaller than today\u2019s \u2013 as you can see if you go to the London Transport Museum, where they have preserved an engine and a coach of this first service.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The coaches were &#8211; to say the least &#8211; quite claustrophobic as they had p<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/the-padded-cell.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-5061\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/the-padded-cell-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"the padded cell\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/the-padded-cell.jpg 150w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/the-padded-cell.jpg 80w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/the-padded-cell.jpg 118w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/the-padded-cell.jpg 239w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/the-padded-cell.jpg 45w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/the-padded-cell.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/the-padded-cell.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">added seats almost to the roof with just a slit at the top for a window (Londoners, ever ready with the sharp wit nicknamed them &#8220;padded cells&#8221;), the reasoning being that, as the line was entirely underground, there was nothing for the passengers to see.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But this unfortunately also included not being able to see which station they were at when the train stopped&#8230;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">There is, sadly, almost nothing left of this original line to see.\u00a0 The original City terminus on King William Street was abandoned in 1900 when the line was extended north and we just have a plaque on a street near the Monument to remind us of this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The running tunnels were enlarged in the 1920s when the line b<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Kennington-Station.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5059\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Kennington-Station-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"Kennington Station\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Kennington-Station.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Kennington-Station.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Kennington-Station.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">ecame part of what we now know as the Northern line, all the stations were rebuilt and the platforms re-tiled and lengthened.\u00a0 It is believed, though, that the surface level station building at Kennington is the one remaining that looks anything like the original.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The railway was opened officially by Edward, Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) on 4 November 1890.\u00a0 It was opened to the public on 18 December 1890, one hundred and twenty-five years ago today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">If you are interested in transport heritage, Stephen will be repeating his Victoria transport walk in January which tells the fascinating story of how Victoria developed as a transport hub.\u00a0 Not only that, you will see some 100 year tile maps, an air terminal dating from 1939 and you will also find out why Green Line buses all have route numbers beginning with 700, so not just for anoraks!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">You can check Stepehen&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/walks\/?guide=Stephen+Benton\" target=\"_blank\">walks page<\/a> for his up-to-date schedule and booking details<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You may recall the fairly recent celebrations for the 150th anniversary of World\u2019s first Underground railway which opened in 1863 and ran from Paddington to Farringdon.\u00a0 But that was a steam railway and it took nearly another 30 years before electricity was used to power trains.
