{"id":5307,"date":"2016-02-24T21:51:06","date_gmt":"2016-02-24T21:51:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/?p=5307"},"modified":"2016-02-24T21:51:06","modified_gmt":"2016-02-24T21:51:06","slug":"canvassing-with-a-sailor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/2016\/02\/canvassing-with-a-sailor\/","title":{"rendered":"Canvassing with a sailor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In the first of series of posts on some of the fascinating characters you will encounter on our walks celebrating International Women&#8217;s Day, <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/walks\/?guide=Jen+Pedler\" target=\"_blank\">Jen Pedler<\/a> shares the story of Nancy Astor&#8217;s journey to becoming our first ever female MP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Wordel.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5294\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5294 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Wordel.jpg\" alt=\"Wordel\" width=\"642\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Wordel.jpg 642w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Wordel.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Nancy Astor was the first woman to take her seat in parliament when she was elected as MP for Plymouth Sutton in 1919.\u00a0 She is commemorated by a blue plaque on the wall of no. 4 St James\u2019s Square, the town house where she lived with her husband Waldorf Astor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Nancy and Waldorf, both American ex-pats, met on an Atlantic voyage in 1905.\u00a0 They shared the same birthday &#8211; 19 May 1879 &#8211; but there the similarities ended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Nancy-Astor-plaque.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5308\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5308\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Nancy-Astor-plaque-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Nancy Astor plaque\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Nancy-Astor-plaque.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Nancy-Astor-plaque.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>He had been born in New York City, son of the immensely rich William Waldorf, 1st Viscount Astor, and had an aristocratic upbringing since his family moved to England when he was aged 12;\u00a0 she was a divorced woman with a young son escaping a four-year abusive marriage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">This was a time when many wealthy American women were marrying into the English aristocracy. <em>\u201cHave you come to get our husbands?\u201d<\/em> an Englishwoman asked her.\u00a0 To which Nancy, never short of a sharp retort replied <em>\u201cIf you knew the trouble I\u2019d had getting rid of mine\u2026\u201d<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">She married Waldorf Astor a year later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">She encouraged her husband to launch a career in politics and he was elected as MP for Plymouth in 1910.\u00a0 However, he had to resign his seat soon after as the death of his father in 1919 elevated him to the peerage as 2nd Viscount Astor and he was bound to take his seat in the House of Lords.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Nancy decided to stand in the resultant by-election.\u00a0 As she was not familiar with the area she was assigned a naval officer to escort her while she was canvassing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">One of the doors they knocked on was opened by a young girl who informed them that her mother was out, but had left the instructions that <em>\u201cif a lady comes with a sailor they&#8217;re to use the upstairs room and leave ten bob&#8221;.<\/em><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Nancy duly won the seat and sat in Parliament as a Unionist (Tory) MP for the next 25 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hear more about Nancy Astor and other powerful, pompous, pioneering (but not always posh) women who left their mark on the exclusive area of St James\u2019s (an area better known for its gentlemen\u2019s clubs) on our \u2018Women of St James\u2019s Walk\u2019 with <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/themes\/footprints\/walk.php?id=20694888970\" target=\"_blank\">Jen Pedler (1st March)<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/themes\/footprints\/walk.php?id=20697353341\" target=\"_blank\">Joanna Moncrieff (11th March)<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the first of series of posts on some of the fascinating characters you will encounter on our walks celebrating International Women&#8217;s Day, Jen Pedler shares the story of Nancy Astor&#8217;s journey to becoming our first ever female MP.
