But his head, figuratively speaking, was always in London where he found fame and fortune as both an actor and playwright.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Where his <em>actual<\/em> skull may now rest is, however, a matter for much speculation following an archaeological investigation of the Bard\u2019s grave in the Church of the Holy Trinity in Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The investigation, led by archaeologist Kevin Colls from Staffordshire University, may support persistent rumours that William\u2019s skull was removed in the late 18th century by grave robbers in defiance of the doom-laden warning on his gravestone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Shakespeare-Hemming-Condell.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5395\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5395\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Shakespeare-Hemming-Condell-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Shakespeare Hemming Condell\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Shakespeare-Hemming-Condell.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Shakespeare-Hemming-Condell.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>It reads:<em> \u201cGood friend, for Jesus sake forbeare, to dig the dust enclosed here. Blessed be the man that spares these stones. And curst be he that moves my bones\u201d<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Colls and his team took no chances. In strict accordance with permission granted by the Church of England, they didn\u2019t disturb Shakespeare\u2019s bones but used non-invasive ground penetrating radar to examine the ground beneath the gravestone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>\u201cWe have Shakespeare\u2019s burial with an odd disturbance at the head end and we have a story that suggests that at some point in history someone\u2019s come in and taken the skull of Shakespeare,\u201d<\/em> said Colls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cIt\u2019s very, very convincing to me that his skull isn\u2019t at Holy Trinity at all.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But neither, as another legend claims, is it hidden in a crypt at St Leonard\u2019s Church at Beoley, in the neighbouring county of Worcestershire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The Colls team was given permission to survey this crypt using a laser scan. The findings were subjected to forensic anthropological analysis that revealed the skull was of an unidentified woman aged about 70 at the time of her death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">As Emilia, attendant to Desdemona, said in Shakespeare\u2019s Othello: <em>&#8220;Tis neither here nor there.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/yorick.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5398\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5398\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/yorick-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"yorick\" width=\"350\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/yorick.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/yorick.jpg 630w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a>However, it could, as memorably declared by Romeo\u2019s close friend Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, be <em>\u201ca wild goose chase\u201d<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">There may, of course, be a prosaic and almost entirely uncontroversial reason for the significant repair to the head end of Shakespeare\u2019s grave; subsidence of the floor in the chancel of Holy Trinity triggered not by unscrupulous trophy hunters but by natural causes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Patrick Taylor of Holy Trinity isn\u2019t convinced that the evidence unearthed by Colls is sufficient to support the theory that Shakespeare\u2019s skull is missing. And he adds that the Bard\u2019s wishes for his bones to be undisturbed will be respected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The full story of the archaeological survey of Shakespeare\u2019s grave can be seen in a Channel 4 television documentary entitled <em>Secret History: Shakespeare\u2019s Tomb<\/em> due to be broadcast on Easter Saturday at 8pm. But permit me a spoiler: as the survey proved, Shakespeare was not buried in a tomb but in a shallow (about one metre deep) grave.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">You won\u2019t need to do any digging to discover the stories of Shakespeare\u2019s London with the month-long Footprints of London festival of Shakespeare walks that kicks off on Saturday 2nd April with <em>Shakespeare in Shoreditch<\/em>.
