{"id":5574,"date":"2016-07-22T14:40:33","date_gmt":"2016-07-22T13:40:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/?p=5574"},"modified":"2016-07-23T00:07:48","modified_gmt":"2016-07-22T23:07:48","slug":"a-not-very-special-relationship-john-adams-in-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/2016\/07\/a-not-very-special-relationship-john-adams-in-london\/","title":{"rendered":"A Not Very Special Relationship: John Adams In London"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">With the &#8220;special relationship&#8221; under a new post-Brexit scrutiny and our cousins across the pond in election fever, <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/walks\/?guide=Michael+Duncan\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Duncan<\/a> explores the London connection of maybe the most forgotten of the Founding Fathers.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_5575\" style=\"width: 285px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/cid_ii_155a793a83ee3568.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5575\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5575\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5575\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/cid_ii_155a793a83ee3568-275x300.png\" alt=\"John Adams\" width=\"275\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/cid_ii_155a793a83ee3568.png 275w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/cid_ii_155a793a83ee3568.png 443w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5575\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">John Adams, National Historical Centre, Washington DC<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">John Adams, the Second President of the United States, is overshadowed by his fellow founding fathers. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">George Washington towered over him physically and continues to do so today in terms of reputation; Jefferson likewise despite the fact that he owned slaves, a practice John Adams found abhorrent.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">And even the dashing and handsome Hamilton is set to eclipse the second President with a hip-hop musical of his life dominating the Tony awards this year (and set to hit the West End in late 2017).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Even his revolutionary cousin, Samuel Adams, who never achieved high office,\u00a0 is more of a household name today &#8211;\u00a0 perhaps because of the beer that bears his name!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But John Adams should not be overlooked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">He was Vice-President to George Washington for two terms before succeeding him as President in 1797.\u00a0 He helped Jefferson draft the Declaration of Independence, was a leading revolutionary thinker and one of the leading lawyers of his day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But he also spent time in Europe, representing the United States in France and the Netherlands before coming to London as his country\u2019s first Ambassador to the Court of St James&#8217;s in 1785.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">He set about stabilising relations between the two countries,\u00a0 during which time he met George III for a meeting described as <em>\u201cnot a disaster\u201d<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">For such fantastic progress, on the bi-centenary of American independence he was praised by our current Queen\u00a0 for restoring <em>\u201cthe old good nature and the old good humour between our peoples\u201d<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But it wasn\u2019t a barrel of laughs.\u00a0 Londoners did not take to having the embodiment of their nation\u2019s failure walking the streets and he and his wife Abigail were subjected to stares and occasional abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">And where was his first residence and embassy?
