\u00a0If you are interested in the history, growth and development of the area, come on<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/event\/2313596028\" target=\"_blank\"> our walk through Highbury on 12<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0November<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The village of Highbury in the Borough of <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Islington\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islington\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Islington<\/a> is today probably most famous as the home of <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Arsenal F.C.\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arsenal_F.C.\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Arsenal Football Club<\/a>.\u00a0 In previous centuries it was more infamous \u2013 for the destruction of a palatial manor in the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Peasants' Revolt\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peasants%27_Revolt\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Peasants Revolt<\/a> of 1381 and for the high jinks at <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Highbury\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=51.552,-0.097&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=51.552,-0.097 (Highbury)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"geolocation\">Highbury Barn<\/a> in the 1800s. \u00a0Once peaceful pastureland, famous for its dairy herds, the arrival of the railway in 1849 made it possible for people to live in clean air and commute into the City, and for city-dwellers to escape the noise and smoke and travel to rural Islington on Sunday excursions.\u00a0 By 1854 the line was carrying over 8 million passengers a year and in 1872 a huge neo-Gothic railway station, complete with tower, was built at Highbury corner \u2013 it was a rival to the great St Pancras in its imposing architecture but it was badly damaged in the Second World War and subsequently demolished.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the Sunday excursionists were heading for Highbury Barn \u2013 in the 1700s and early 1800s it was a\u00a0 popular place to take cakes and ale, but after the railway brought increasing numbers of people the musical performances and firework displays were extended to include evening dancing with acrobatic displays. \u00a0In its heyday you would have seen Blondin, the famous tight-rope walker, and Leotard, the great acrobat and daring ascents by hot-air balloonists.\u00a0 Gradually, however, it degenerated into a drunken and riotous venue and ultimately it was closed down after an exhibition of scandalous French dancing!<\/p>\n<p>The arrival of the railway and subsequent development of Highbury were part of the \u201crelentless march of bricks and mortar\u201d portrayed by Islington resident and cartoonist, George Cruickshank, who was dismayed to see the fields disappearing under rows of houses.\u00a0 \u00a0And Highbury is lucky to have retained an area of open space \u2013 the largest park in the Borough of Islington is here at <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Highbury Fields\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Highbury_Fields\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Highbury Fields<\/a>.\u00a0 By the early 1800s the fields on the outskirts of the City of London, which for many centuries had been places for open-air recreation, had been built over and there was an attempt to preserve 500 acres in Islington as a park to be the \u201clungs of London\u201d.\u00a0 The developers had other ideas and eventually these plans for a grand park were reduced to 115 acres in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Finsbury Park\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Finsbury_Park\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Finsbury Park<\/a> and a small remnant of 27.5 acres here in Highbury.\u00a0 These are protected by an Act of Parliament and preserved \u201cto the perpetual use by the public for exercise and recreation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Other Eighteenth Century playing fields are still used for recreation, but perhaps not in a way that the developers might have imagined \u2013 the playing fields of the Theological College based in Highbury became the hallowed turf of Arsenal Football Club!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"zemanta-pixie\" style=\"margin-top: 10px; height: 15px;\"><a class=\"zemanta-pixie-a\" title=\"Enhanced by Zemanta\" href=\"http:\/\/www.zemanta.com\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"zemanta-pixie-img\" style=\"border: none; float: right;\" src=\"http:\/\/img.zemanta.com\/zemified_a.png?x-id=f632e7e4-2091-412d-930c-dc8468f3b7dc\" alt=\"Enhanced by Zemanta\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you pass through Highbury as a commuter or as a football fan?
