{"id":5770,"date":"2016-10-16T22:18:38","date_gmt":"2016-10-16T21:18:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/?p=5770"},"modified":"2016-10-16T22:18:38","modified_gmt":"2016-10-16T21:18:38","slug":"the-real-london-of-ripper-street","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/2016\/10\/the-real-london-of-ripper-street\/","title":{"rendered":"The Real London of Ripper Street"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">After the tragic and thrilling denouement of series four of <em>Ripper Street<\/em> and as we all eagerly await series five, <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/walks\/?guide=Sean+Patterson\" target=\"_blank\">Sean Patterson<\/a> has been looking into quite how much of this superb drama is rooted in the real East End of the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Ripper-Street-series-4-cast-c-BBC.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5779\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Ripper-Street-series-4-cast-c-BBC-300x114.jpg\" alt=\"Ripper Street series 4 cast \u00a9 BBC\" width=\"400\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Ripper-Street-series-4-cast-c-BBC.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Ripper-Street-series-4-cast-c-BBC.jpg 768w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Ripper-Street-series-4-cast-c-BBC.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Ripper-Street-series-4-cast-c-BBC.jpg 1141w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">As a fan of the BBC drama Ripper Street I\u2019ve always been impressed by the writers\u2019 ability to weave real historical facts and incidents into the fictional narrative.\u00a0 To name but a few:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Leman St police station is is still there and correctly pinpointed in the series (a<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">nd it really was the home of \u2018H\u2019 Division);<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> as is the Brown Bear pub; there really was a tragic and fatal train crash in the area; the \u2018current wars\u2019 between devotees of AC or DC electricity referenced in an earlier series actually happened; and the river boat accident that Reid thought had killed his daughter Mathilda was real too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But it&#8217;s something else about Mathilda Reid, teasingly referred to in an early episode of series four, that really piqued my interest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Late Victorian London streets were graded into socio-economic groupings by philanthropist Charles Booth to create his famous colour coded \u2018poverty maps\u2019 (which featured heavily in the last year&#8217;s BBC Two series <em>The Secret History of our Streets<\/em>).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5778\" style=\"width: 337px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Mathilda-Reid-c-BBC.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5778\" class=\"wp-image-5778 \" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Mathilda-Reid-c-BBC-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Mathilda Reid \u00a9 BBC\" width=\"327\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Mathilda-Reid-c-BBC.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Mathilda-Reid-c-BBC.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 327px) 100vw, 327px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5778\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">Mathilda Reid armed with her researcher&#8217;s clipboard!<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Clearly unable to walk all of London\u2019s streets by himself, Booth engaged a small army of researchers to help, most of them sourced via Toynbee Hall (which stands to this day fairly close to Leman St).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In episode two of series four, Mathilda informed her father that she was working as a researcher for \u2018Mr Booth&#8217;, but strangely the great philanthropist wasn\u2019t mentioned again in this series.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">It seems unlikely the writers would have included such an esoteric (but accurate) detail unless it will pay off in a storyline later, so I guess we will have to wait for series five to see how this particular connection develops.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">It is also accurate for the writers to have picked being a Booth researcher as Mathilda&#8217;s chosen employment, because a surprising number of Booth\u2019s helpers were in fact women. It&#8217;s worth noting that female researches would probably have more success interviewing prostitutes or women working in &#8220;sweated labour&#8221;, so their input would have been invaluable to achieve the comprehensive mapping Booth was seeking.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Most famous among them was that great late Victorian liberal, Booth\u2019s wife\u2019s cousin Beatrice Potter (later Webb) who smashed firmly through the low glass ceiling that hemmed in women at the time (and incidentally bore a striking resemblance to Anna Burnett who plays Mathilda Reid).<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"height: 326px; width: 475.5px;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 213px;\">\n<p><div id=\"attachment_5776\" style=\"width: 206px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/beatrice-webb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5776\" class=\"wp-image-5776 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/beatrice-webb-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"beatrice-webb\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/beatrice-webb.jpg 196w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/beatrice-webb.jpg 220w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5776\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">Beatrice Webb<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 245.5px;\">\n<p><div id=\"attachment_5777\" style=\"width: 196px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/clara_collet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5777\" class=\"wp-image-5777 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/clara_collet-186x300.jpg\" alt=\"clara_collet\" width=\"186\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/clara_collet.jpg 186w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/clara_collet.jpg 462w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5777\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">Clara Collet<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Less well-known but no less impressive was Clara Collet, well-educated at North London Collegiate School For Girls, she went on to graduate from UCL before spending three months in the East End researching for Booth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">It was a time of very mixed fortunes for the female poor of the East End, what with the terrible Ripper Murders and the successful Match Girls Strike occurring in the same year, but Collet was delighted to note the formation of the largest union of women in England which came about as a direct result of the strike.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I run three walks that specifically follow the routes that Booth and his researchers walked to compile the maps; one in Deptford, one in Clerkenwell and one in Whitechapel<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The latter covers much of the territory that features in the series including Tenter St where Long Susan\u2019s brothel is set.
