The trees have grown larger in the hundred plus years since the novel was written and the graveyard is now a public park with the gravestones, still leaning this way and that, arrayed around the edges. The church itself, though, is still much as it would have been in Gissing\u2019s day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2_St_John_Gate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-6162\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2_St_John_Gate-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2_St_John_Gate.jpg 150w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2_St_John_Gate.jpg 80w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2_St_John_Gate.jpg 118w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2_St_John_Gate.jpg 239w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2_St_John_Gate.jpg 45w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2_St_John_Gate.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/2_St_John_Gate.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>At the top of St John\u2019s Lane stands <em>\u201cthe embattled and windowed archway which is all that remains above ground of the great Priory of St John of Jerusalem.\u201d<\/em> (Ch. 6). This \u201c<em>monument of old time\u201d<\/em>, as Gissing describes it, had fallen into disrepair by the late nineteenth century but was saved when it was bought by the revived Order of St John. It\u2019s now a fascinating museum, well worth a visit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Walking through its arch brings us to St John\u2019s Square, which hardly seems like a square at all. As Gissing says: \u201c<em>Of all areas in London thus defined, this Square of St John is probably the <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/3_St_John_Square.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6163 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/3_St_John_Square-e1507062588972-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/3_St_John_Square-e1507062588972.jpg 150w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/3_St_John_Square-e1507062588972.jpg 80w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/3_St_John_Square-e1507062588972.jpg 118w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/3_St_John_Square-e1507062588972.jpg 239w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/3_St_John_Square-e1507062588972.jpg 45w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/3_St_John_Square-e1507062588972.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/3_St_John_Square-e1507062588972.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>most irregular in outline. It is cut in two by Clerkenwell Road\u2026\u201d<\/em> (Ch. 6). The road had been built shortly before Gissing wrote the novel, sweeping away slums as well as chopping the square in half.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In Gissing\u2019s time the square was occupied by workshops where could be found \u201c<em>Workers in metal, workers in glass and in enamel, workers in weed, workers in every substance on earth, or from the waters under the earth that can be made commercially valuable<\/em>\u201d<em>.<\/em> (Ch. 2) Many of the old buildings are still there but now house a hotel and restaurants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/4_Horseshoe_pub.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-6164\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/4_Horseshoe_pub-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/4_Horseshoe_pub.jpg 150w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/4_Horseshoe_pub.jpg 80w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/4_Horseshoe_pub.jpg 118w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/4_Horseshoe_pub.jpg 239w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/4_Horseshoe_pub.jpg 45w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/4_Horseshoe_pub.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/4_Horseshoe_pub.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>In Clerkenwell Close we can still find the Horseshoe pub where <em>\u201c\u2026 a little slight girl, perhaps thirteen years old\u201d<\/em> is sent by her bullying mistress to buy <em>\u201ca pint of old six\u201d<\/em>. (Ch. 1) Drink is the downfall of so many of the characters in the bleak underworld of Gissing\u2019s novel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Beside Sadler\u2019s Wells Theatre we can walk along Myddleton Passage where, in the novel, a <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/5_Myddleton_Passage_graffiti.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-6165\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/5_Myddleton_Passage_graffiti-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/5_Myddleton_Passage_graffiti.jpg 150w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/5_Myddleton_Passage_graffiti.jpg 80w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/5_Myddleton_Passage_graffiti.jpg 118w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/5_Myddleton_Passage_graffiti.jpg 239w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/5_Myddleton_Passage_graffiti.jpg 45w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/5_Myddleton_Passage_graffiti.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/5_Myddleton_Passage_graffiti.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>thwarted lover waits in ambush for her rival. While she was waiting <em>\u201c\u2026 a policeman came along with echoing tread, and eyed her suspiciously\u2026\u201d <\/em>(Ch. 8) Perhaps one of the policemen who scratched their numbers into the wall \u2013 Victorian graffiti that is still there today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">These are just some of the locations featured in the novel that can still be found. But Shooters Gardens, the mouldering slum at the heart of Gissing\u2019s Nether World, has completely disappeared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/6_steps_into_Peabody_Estate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-6166\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/6_steps_into_Peabody_Estate-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/6_steps_into_Peabody_Estate.jpg 150w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/6_steps_into_Peabody_Estate.jpg 80w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/6_steps_into_Peabody_Estate.jpg 118w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/6_steps_into_Peabody_Estate.jpg 239w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/6_steps_into_Peabody_Estate.jpg 45w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/6_steps_into_Peabody_Estate.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/6_steps_into_Peabody_Estate.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>In fact, it probably never existed at all but was a pseudonym for a warren of slum dwellings nestling in the area below Bowling Green Lane. Toward the close of the novel we learn that the slum\u2019s days are numbered and that<em> \u201c\u2026 in the spring there would come wholesale demolition, and model-lodgings would thereafter occupy the site. Meanwhile the Gardens looked their surliest; the walls stood in a perpetual black sweat; a mouldy reek came from the open doorways\u2026\u201d<\/em> (Ch. 28)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The \u2018model lodgings\u2019 referred to are almost certainly the Clerkenwell Peabody Estate, built in the 1880s on land acquired for slum clearance by the Metropolitan Board of Works. Steps lead into the estate from Bowling Green Lane. Was this once the entrance to Shooters Gardens which \u201c<em>To enter from the obscurer end, you descended a flight of steps\u2026\u201d<\/em>? (Ch. 8)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">These are the <em>\u201csqualid and toil-infested ways\u201d<\/em> of Clerkenwell, trodden by the characters in Gissing\u2019s novel.
