night walks, booking details are on his <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/walks\/?guide=Mark+Rowland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">walks page<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Dickens-sbb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4675\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Dickens-sbb-300x160.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Dickens-sbb.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Dickens-sbb.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Dickens-sbb.jpg 1135w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>\u201cIf you do not want to live with evil-doers, do not live in London\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">So said Richard of Devizes in his <em>Chronicle<\/em> of 1192 which carried this stern warning for those who might be attracted by the bright lights (or whatever qualified as such in medieval England) of our fair capital city, listing his proofs of the <em>\u201cevils of the capital\u201d<\/em> as:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>\u201cActors, jesters, smooth-skinned lads, Moors, flatterers, pretty boys, effeminates, pederasts, singing-and dancing-girls, quacks, belly dancers, sorceresses, extortioners, night-walkers, magicians, mimes, beggars, buffoons\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Fair enough, you can imagine some of those striking the fear of god into your average medieval traveller, but night walkers?\u00a0 What exactly did he have against those who liked to take a stroll after everyone else had taken to their bed?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Matthew-Beaumont-night-walking.jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-6176\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Matthew-Beaumont-night-walking.jpg-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Matthew-Beaumont-night-walking.jpg.jpg 150w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Matthew-Beaumont-night-walking.jpg.jpg 80w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Matthew-Beaumont-night-walking.jpg.jpg 118w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Matthew-Beaumont-night-walking.jpg.jpg 239w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Matthew-Beaumont-night-walking.jpg.jpg 45w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Matthew-Beaumont-night-walking.jpg.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Matthew-Beaumont-night-walking.jpg.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>For an in-depth analysis of this particularly London tradition and the reasons it was so frowned upon, I can heartily recommend Matthew Beaumont\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Nightwalking-Nocturnal-History-Matthew-Beaumont\/dp\/1781687951\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">excellent book<\/a> on the subject.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Suffice to say, though, that the night walker has always been seen as something of a maverick, at best setting themselves outside the norms of society and at worst being seen as \u201cup to no good\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">So offended by the practice was Edward I that he saw fit to enact a law in the late 13<sup>th<\/sup> century declaring it illegal and, whilst it was <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">for much of its life <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">more recognised in the breach, it wasn\u2019t in fact repealed until as late as 1824.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Charles Dickens is, of course, prime among London&#8217;s long and illustrious history of night walkers, but for him it was more born out of pragmatism. He suffered insomnia for much of his life (particularly in the period after his father died in 1851) so he would set out on (sometimes epic) night walks which he saw as a much more useful way of spending a sleepless night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Moon-over-Westminster-Bridge.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6178 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Moon-over-Westminster-Bridge-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Moon over Westminster Bridge (c) Mark Rowland\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Moon-over-Westminster-Bridge.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Moon-over-Westminster-Bridge.jpg 768w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Moon-over-Westminster-Bridge.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Moon-over-Westminster-Bridge.jpg 1612w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Moon-over-Westminster-Bridge.jpg 2418w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>London was his muse (or <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">as he put it, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">his <em>\u201cmagic lantern\u201d<\/em>) and these nocturnal treks allowed him unobserved <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">turn his own gimlet-eyed\u00a0 observation on the slumbering city in search of yet more inspiration for his legendary themes and characters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But there was for him also the more practical purpose of character research. Dickens was, of course, the champion of the underdog in Victorian London and one of the reasons he took to night walking was to impose upon himself a state of <em>\u201chouselessness\u201d<\/em> to help him empathise better with many of those whose plight he sought to highlight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">He wrote two essays specific to the subject \u2013 <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.victorianlondon.org\/books\/boz-102.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Streets \u2013 Night<\/a> (Sketches by Boz, 1832)<\/em> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/night-walks-by-charles-dickens-1690272\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Night Walks<\/a> (The Uncommercial Traveller, 1861) <\/em>\u2013 both of which gave him free rein to share his experiences and unleash his descriptive prose on the subject of London by night:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Moon-over-Bermondsey.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6177 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Moon-over-Bermondsey-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Moon over Bermondsey (c) Mark Rowland\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Moon-over-Bermondsey.jpg 225w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Moon-over-Bermondsey.jpg 768w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Moon-over-Bermondsey.jpg 1612w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Moon-over-Bermondsey.jpg 2418w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>\u201c\u2026but the river had an awful look, the buildings on the banks were muffled in black shrouds, and the reflected lights seemed to originate deep in the water, as if the spectres of suicides were holding them to show where they went down.\u00a0 The wild moon and clouds were as restless as an evil conscience in a tumbled bed, and the very shadow of the immensity of London seemed to lie oppressively upon the river.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">If you ever stroll along one of the quieter stretches of the bank of the Thames at night, particularly in The City of London (as we do on my walk), you will straight away catch Dickens\u2019s fascination for doing so. Aside from the relative peace and quiet, it also offers an entirely different perspective on a place you think you know so well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">As the talented East End artist Mary Swan <a href=\"https:\/\/markslondonrambles.wordpress.com\/2013\/11\/22\/guest-blog-by-artist-mary-swan-dickens-after-dark\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beautifully put it<\/a> after she had been on the walk:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>&#8220;The fascination with this river for artists, writers and musicians is legendary and understandable when standing alongside it at night in all its powerful oily-black glory.\u00a0 The effect upon the psyche can be commanding, disturbing and inspirational all at once.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">So why not wrap up warm and join me to follow in Dickens&#8217;s footsteps?
