{"id":6196,"date":"2017-10-10T11:02:01","date_gmt":"2017-10-10T10:02:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/?p=6196"},"modified":"2017-10-10T11:02:02","modified_gmt":"2017-10-10T10:02:02","slug":"paris-to-london-refuge-from-scandal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/2017\/10\/paris-to-london-refuge-from-scandal\/","title":{"rendered":"Paris to London: Refuge from Scandal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">With our <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/other-events\/literaryfestival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Literary Footprints Festival 2017<\/a> in full swing, <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/guides\/alan-fortune\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alan Fortune<\/a> recounts the tale of a key literary landmark in Soho.\u00a0 Alan will be running his <em>Literary Soho<\/em> walk on 15th and 24th October, booking details are on his <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/walks\/?guide=Alan+Fortune\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">walks page<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Footprints-of-London-LitFest-wordcloud.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5663\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Footprints-of-London-LitFest-wordcloud-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Footprints-of-London-LitFest-wordcloud.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Footprints-of-London-LitFest-wordcloud.jpg 768w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Footprints-of-London-LitFest-wordcloud.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Footprints-of-London-LitFest-wordcloud.jpg 1078w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">On the south side of Old Compton Street in the area known as Soho\u2019s gay village lies <em>Bar Soho<\/em>.\u00a0 Its unremarkable fa\u00e7ade masks a remarkable, and very apposite, history.\u00a0 In the late 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, as the <em>H<\/em><em>ibernia Stores<\/em>, it hosted radical lectures attended by the renowned French poets Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud, themselves in a homosexual relationship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Bar-Soho-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6200 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Bar-Soho-5-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Bar-Soho-5.jpg 150w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Bar-Soho-5.jpg 80w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Bar-Soho-5.jpg 118w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Bar-Soho-5.jpg 45w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>In 1877 the two poets had fled the fall of the Paris Commune, having caused a major scandal in Paris when Rimbaud, then 17, had seduced Verlaine, 28, away from his beautiful wife,\u00a0 Mathilde, and son, Georges. \u2018Enfant terrible\u2019 Rimbaud, destined to become a French literary great, lived with Verlaine in Old College Street in Camden Town; both poets produced major works during their eighteen month London exile.\u00a0 The relationship was tempestuous, violent and drink-fuelled.\u00a0 Rimbaud hated London, describing it as <em>\u2018black as a crow and noisy as a duck\u2019<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">And it did not end well. After their return to mainland Europe a drunken row resulted in Verlaine pulling a pistol and firing it twice, one bullet hitting Rimbaud\u2019s wrist. Verlaine was arrested and imprisoned, not because he was\u00a0 homosexual, which was considered in Belgium to be inappropriate, but not criminal, behaviour, but for the <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Bar-Soho-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-6199\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Bar-Soho-4-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Bar-Soho-4.jpg 150w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Bar-Soho-4.jpg 80w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Bar-Soho-4.jpg 118w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Bar-Soho-4.jpg 45w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>attempted assassination of his lover.\u00a0 Rimbaud had no interest in pressing charges so Verlaine\u2019s punishment was probably motivated by a judicial dislike for his homosexuality and Communard past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">During his incarceration in Mons prison, Verlaine is considered to have written some of the high quality work which earned him the title \u2018prince of poets\u2019 among some of his contemporaries.\u00a0 This is in stark contrast to Oscar Wilde, who Verlaine had befriended in London.\u00a0 Hard labour in Reading jail destroyed Wilde, who wrote little of significance again, whereas Verlaine\u2019s creativity blossomed in the less harsh prison regime in Mons, where he was also denied the absinthe which had ruined his health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Verlaine and Rimbaud are both still regarded as giants of French literature and their exile in London was an important part of both their life stories, join me for a stroll around literary Soho to hear more! <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With our Literary Footprints Festival 2017 in full swing, Alan Fortune recounts the tale of a key literary landmark in Soho.\u00a0 Alan will be running his Literary Soho walk on 15th and 24th October, booking details are on his walks page.
