Breuer was initially a student at the School before becoming the director of its furniture workshop in 1924 whilst Moholy-Nagy was a photographer and graphic designer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The school was unique in combing craftsmanship with bold modernist designs often made <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Isokon-plaque.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-6457\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Isokon-plaque-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Isokon-plaque.jpg 150w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Isokon-plaque.jpg 80w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Isokon-plaque.jpg 118w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Isokon-plaque.jpg 239w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Isokon-plaque.jpg 45w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Isokon-plaque.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Isokon-plaque.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>from the latest materials available.\u00a0 It was known for its political radicalism, hence being a target of the Nazis, so it was a wise move for the artists to leave and come to the U.K.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The three all came to live in the Isokon flats in the 1930s when they first escaped Nazi Europe and before moving on to the USA. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Gropius gave artistic direction to the Pritchards who owned the flats; Breuer designed the famous Isokon bar in the flats and much of the radical lightweight furniture; whilst Moholy-Nagy contributed to designing the advertising which helped sell the flats (and also Breuer\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Isokon_Long_Chair\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isokon Long Chair<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">There is currently an exhibition on Moholy-Nagy in the Isokon Gallery and you can see examples of Breuer\u2019s designs there too (the Gallery is open weekends only and my Modernist Hampstead Walk concludes there).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Nevinson-plaque.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-6458\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Nevinson-plaque-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Nevinson-plaque.jpg 150w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Nevinson-plaque.jpg 80w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Nevinson-plaque.jpg 118w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Nevinson-plaque.jpg 239w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Nevinson-plaque.jpg 45w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Nevinson-plaque.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Nevinson-plaque.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>But this summer has also seen another famous artist honoured with a blue plaque, Richard Wynne Nevinson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Nevinson was a British artist best known for his art around the period of the First World War.\u00a0 He was born in Hampstead and the house in Downside Crescent, which now honours him with a plaque, was his family home from when he was a toddler.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Richard-Wynne-Nevinsons-house.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-6459\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Richard-Wynne-Nevinsons-house-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Richard-Wynne-Nevinsons-house.jpg 150w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Richard-Wynne-Nevinsons-house.jpg 80w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Richard-Wynne-Nevinsons-house.jpg 118w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Richard-Wynne-Nevinsons-house.jpg 239w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Richard-Wynne-Nevinsons-house.jpg 45w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Richard-Wynne-Nevinsons-house.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Richard-Wynne-Nevinsons-house.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>He was one of a group of Brilliant artists who studied together at the Slade School of Art Between 1908-1910.\u00a0 His peers included Stanley Spencer, Paul Nash (briefly) and Mark Gertler as well as Sydney Carline and Dora Carrington.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">This group of friends had passionate friendships and relationships and spent much time in Hampstead often socialising at the artistic Carline and Nevinson households.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Nevinson became famous for his First World War paintings initially executed in a Vorticist style which depicted speed and movement and was inspired by Cubism.\u00a0 As the War continued, he reverted to a realist depiction of war which was equally criticised.
