Conrad\u2019s The Secret Agent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In the next in our special series of <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/other-events\/london-literary-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Literary Footprints 2018<\/a> blog posts, Oonagh Gay dips into the\u00a0 murky world of political intrigue in Victorian London.\u00a0 You can find out more on Oonagh&#8217;s walk <em>Conrad&#8217;s The Secret Agent: Anarchism in Fitzrovia<\/em>, dates and booking details on <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/walks\/?guide=Oonagh+Gay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oonagh&#8217;s walks page<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Footprints-of-London-LitFest-wordcloud.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5663\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Footprints-of-London-LitFest-wordcloud-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Footprints-of-London-LitFest-wordcloud.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Footprints-of-London-LitFest-wordcloud.jpg 768w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Footprints-of-London-LitFest-wordcloud.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Footprints-of-London-LitFest-wordcloud.jpg 1078w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Victorian Britain was a nation which utterly refused to kow-tow to despotic foreign governments.\u00a0 This made it one of the few countries in Europe where you couldn\u2019t be extradited for political crimes.\u00a0Joseph Conrad used this backdrop to paint a portrait of the community of exiled anarchists subsisting in Soho and Fitzrovia in his London novel The Secret Agent, published in 1907.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Adolf Verloc, the double agent, works in a bookshop which sells pornography \u2018out the back\u2019 and his English wife turns a blind eye to the foreigners who hatch plots in her sitting room, until her beloved brother is used in one of <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Royal_Greenwich_Observatory_Postcard_c1902-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6513\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Royal_Greenwich_Observatory_Postcard_c1902-2-300x185.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Royal_Greenwich_Observatory_Postcard_c1902-2.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Royal_Greenwich_Observatory_Postcard_c1902-2.jpg 531w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Royal_Greenwich_Observatory_Postcard_c1902-2.jpg 616w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>her husband\u2019s plots, with devastating effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Conrad based the novel on a real-life event in Greenwich in 1894, where a French anarchist, Martial Bourdin, blew himself up in a misguided attempt to blow up the Observatory. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In Bourdin\u2019s pocket was a membership card for the main anarchist centre in London, the Autonomie Club, then based at 6 Windmill Street, and the Metropolitan Police, led by\u00a0 inspector Melville\u00a0 immediately raided the club in search of collaborators.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Meanwhile the assassination of the Russian Tsar in 1881 prompted a gradual Home Office rethink on the question of harbouring political exiles, which reached a tipping point with the Sydney Street siege of 1910, where Latvian anarchists held off the Met for several days using automatic machine guns &#8211;
