Chaucer was there to deal with another \u2018Genoese affair\u2019 \u2013 a Genoese ship had been arrested.\u00a0 Chaucer had been to Genoa on King\u2019s business in 1372 so was the best person to negotiate and maintain good relations between the ports although he did not actually become Comptroller of Customs until 1374.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">What would have been utmost in sailor\u2019s minds in <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Canterbury-astrolabe-quadrant-c-1388.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6534 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Canterbury-astrolabe-quadrant-c-1388-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Canterbury astrolabe quadrant c.1388\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Canterbury-astrolabe-quadrant-c-1388.jpg 150w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Canterbury-astrolabe-quadrant-c-1388.jpg 80w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Canterbury-astrolabe-quadrant-c-1388.jpg 118w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Canterbury-astrolabe-quadrant-c-1388.jpg 45w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>this <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">pre-compass age <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">was a fear of being lost at sea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">By the end 1400s it was common to use mathematical tables (solar and lunar tables) and astrolabes (used for measuring angles of the stars as well as the sun). Mariners could now sail across the sea with greater confidence and no doubt greater profits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/treatise-chaucer.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6535 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/treatise-chaucer-150x150.gif\" alt=\"Chaucer's astrolabe treatise\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/treatise-chaucer.gif 150w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/treatise-chaucer.gif 80w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/treatise-chaucer.gif 118w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/treatise-chaucer.gif 239w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/treatise-chaucer.gif 323w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/treatise-chaucer.gif 45w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Chaucer wrote a treatise for his son on how to use an astrolabe \u2013 The Treatise is considered the oldest work in English describing a complex scientific instrument and is admired for its clarity in explaining difficult concepts. Little Lewes was only ten years old, and his father writing in English, accepted that some of the conclusions might, \u2018<em>ben to harde to thy tendir age of ten yeer to conceyve\u2019.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">My research drew me to the Canterbury Astrolabe Quadrant believed to date as early as 1388, probably lost by a travelling scholar who may have lost it in Canterbury while on pilgrimage to that City.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">So let us join the Literary Fest pilgrimage, come and join me on a journey of discovery, but we will not need a compass or an astrolabe for jaunt in the footsteps of Chaucer!\u00a0 Let us go and discover the roads he walked, the people he met, his day job, and the
