Weekday office workers mingle in stylish eateries and cosy gastropubs like the Eagle, while a young crowd packs the area\u2019s sleek bars and clubs after dark.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">This is a far cry from the \u201csqualid and toil-infested ways\u201d that George Gissing describes his 1890s novel <em>The Nether World<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">At the end of the nineteenth century, Clerkenwell was a grimy industrial area where many of the inhabitants both lived and worked. Gissing describes the grinding toil they experienced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Pear-Tree-Court.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-6556\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Pear-Tree-Court-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Pear Tree Court\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Pear-Tree-Court.jpg 150w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Pear-Tree-Court.jpg 80w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Pear-Tree-Court.jpg 118w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Pear-Tree-Court.jpg 239w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Pear-Tree-Court.jpg 45w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Pear-Tree-Court.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Pear-Tree-Court.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>\u201cGo where you may in Clerkenwell, on every hand are multiform evidences of toil, intolerable as a nightmare\u2026. Here every alley is thronged with small industries.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Living conditions were insanitary and overcrowded. Many lived in decrepit, rotting slums where<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>\u201c\u2026 the walls stood in a perpetual black sweat; a mouldy reek came from the open doorways; the beings that passed in and out seemed soaked with grimy moisture, puffed into distortions, hung about with rotting garments.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Clerkenwell-Close.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-6555\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Clerkenwell-Close-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Clerkenwell Close\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Clerkenwell-Close.jpg 150w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Clerkenwell-Close.jpg 80w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Clerkenwell-Close.jpg 118w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Clerkenwell-Close.jpg 239w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Clerkenwell-Close.jpg 45w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Clerkenwell-Close.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Clerkenwell-Close.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>And as for &#8220;stylish eateries&#8221;\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>\u201cThere was a kind of cake exposed in a window in Rosoman Street, two layers of pastry with half an inch of something like very coarse mincemeat between; it cost a halfpenny a square \u2026 A cookshop \u2026 exhibited at midday great dough-puddings, kept hot by jets of steam that came up through the zinc on which they lay.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But despite the changes many of the buildings and streets that George Gissing would have been familiar with can still be found today.
