His novels of the period, <em>End of the Affair<\/em> and the <em>Ministry of Fear<\/em>, are directly taken from his wartime experiences and love affairs in Bloomsbury as an air raid warden, while working at the Ministry of Information based in Senate House (his lover, <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Gower-Mews.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-6565\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Gower-Mews-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Gower Mews\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Gower-Mews.jpg 150w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Gower-Mews.jpg 80w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Gower-Mews.jpg 118w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Gower-Mews.jpg 239w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Gower-Mews.jpg 45w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Gower-Mews.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Gower-Mews.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Dorothy Glover, lived at Gower Mews, and was also an air raid warden there).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">He was one of many writers\u00a0 in the area who lived through the Blitz, with T.S. Eliot, Elizabeth Bowen, and Virginia Woolf all directly affected by the wartime destruction. This walk takes you to the main locations used by Greene, but also introduces you to other writers who brilliantly bring to life the Blitz in Bloomsbury.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Today, Bloomsbury\u2019s terraces are well maintained and prosperous. But in the 1940s, they housed students from the Slade Art School, and nurses from University College Hospital, as Pat Barker\u2019s novel <em>Noonday<\/em> brilliantly brings to life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Canadian-Hostel-Gower-Street.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-6564\" src=\"http:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Canadian-Hostel-Gower-Street-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Canadian Hostel, Gower Street\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Canadian-Hostel-Gower-Street.jpg 150w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Canadian-Hostel-Gower-Street.jpg 80w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Canadian-Hostel-Gower-Street.jpg 118w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Canadian-Hostel-Gower-Street.jpg 239w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Canadian-Hostel-Gower-Street.jpg 45w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Canadian-Hostel-Gower-Street.jpg 300w, https:\/\/footprintsoflondon.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Canadian-Hostel-Gower-Street.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Canadian soldiers, billeted in a hostel were subject to devastating bombing just metres from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (where Greene served as a warden on the night of 16\/17 April 1941) which left the area in ruins. Muriel Spark\u2019s <em>The Girls of Slender Means<\/em> is set in a hostel in 1945, where a buried bomb is the vehicle for the tragedy at the heart of the novel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">One of the main threads running through these novels is illicit sex during wartime; e<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">veryday life is dislocated, and secret affairs flourish, whether heterosexual, or homosexual.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Sarah Waters\u2019 Blitz novel <em>The Night Watch<\/em> also has a Bloomsbury setting, as one of the main characters, Helen, lives in Rathbone Place.
