His buildings, in which applied classical styles to the needs of the modern city, are not only important in themselves, but they also are a great boost to the confidence of London. During Soanes lifetime London starts to see itself as a city at the heart of empire, a worthy successor to Rome and Athens. The artist <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Joseph Gandy\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_Gandy\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Joseph Gandy<\/a> painted Soane\u2019s <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Bank of England\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bank_of_England\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Bank of England<\/a> as a classical ruin\u00a0<a title=\"http:\/\/www.georgianlondon.com\/the-bank-of-england-in-ruins\" href=\"http:\/\/www.georgianlondon.com\/the-bank-of-england-in-ruins\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.georgianlondon.com\/<wbr>the-bank-of-england-in-ruins<\/wbr><\/a>\u00a0, imagining London&#8217;s greatness being remembered longer than the city itself. Soane was more than just an imitator, he used space in an innovative way, like his famous breakfast room which made use of natural light within the classical form. Sadly Soanes work fell out of favour in the later Victorian period, but his influence was felt in the 20th Century with the design for the red telephone box being inspired by Soane\u2019s memorial in St Pancras Churchyard.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Theres lots of Soanes work to explore. Starting at his home and museum in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Lincoln's Inn\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lincoln%27s_Inn\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Lincolns Inn<\/a> Fields always a good place to start,\u00a0<a title=\"http:\/\/www.soane.org\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.soane.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.soane.org\/<\/a>\u00a0sadly the Bank of England has been much mutilated by later architects, but you can hear about it on Footprints of London\u2019s walk\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/event\/2685910631\" target=\"_blank\">Dickens in the City<\/a>. You&#8217;ll have to be lucky to get to see Soane\u2019s interiors at 10 and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"11 Downing Street\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/11_Downing_Street\" rel=\"wikipedia\">11 Downing Street<\/a>, but anyone can enjoy his St John Bethnal Green. Then a trip to <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Dulwich Picture Gallery\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dulwich_Picture_Gallery\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Dulwich Picture Gallery<\/a> is a must, where Soane designed on of the first purpose built art galleries. We are hoping to include the former <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Holy Trinity Church Marylebone\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Holy_Trinity_Church_Marylebone\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Holy Trinity church<\/a> in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Marylebone Road\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marylebone_Road\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Marylebone Road<\/a> in a future Regents Park walk, but you might get invited to a party at this venue in the mean time! Then why not end your tour at Soane\u2019s memorial in Old St Pancras churchyard.
