17-23 June is Refugee Week 2019.  The theme this year is “You, me and those who came before” and is “an invitation to explore the lives of refugees – and those who have welcomed them – throughout the generations.”

To mark this, three of our guides will be running tours during June that explore different aspects of London’s unique place in providing a safe haven for those fleeing persecution elsewhere and the amazing contributions made by migrants to our great city.

Revolution in FitzroviaOn 15th June, Oonagh Gay presents her Marx, Lenin and Anarchism: Revolution in Fitzrovia tour.

This explores how London became a magnet for many different European political refugees and revolutionary activists and will take you in the footsteps of Marx, Lenin and French Communards who rebuilt their lives in Fitzrovia while plotting world revolution.

World in One CityOn 20th June, Mark Rowland takes you through the heart of The City with his World in One City: Migration and the Making of Modern London tour.

London, a home for the ambitious and a haven for those with need.  Founded by a multi-national Roman force and described by Milton in 1644 as “the mansion house of liberty”, Mark’s tour tells the stories of how London grew into a true global city of around 270 nationalities.

Art and Refugees in HampsteadOn 23rd June you can head north with Marilyn Green for her In the Footsteps of Fred Uhlman: Art and Refugees in Hampstead tour.

Discover how the refugee artist Fred Uhlman and his wife formed the artist refugee committee to rescue artists trapped in Czechoslovakia, how their house in Downshire Hill became a refuge for artists and about the organisations that they were involved with.

We look forward to seeing you on the walks!
